Dr. Ben performs breast augmentation under general anesthesia for patients on an outpatient basis. Two major areas of concern when considering this procedure relate to the options for breast implants and incisions. Following an examination and the discussion of your objectives, Dr. Ben will outline your options.
There are two types of FDA-approved implants that offer different qualities. These are saline implants and silicone implants. Silicone implants have recently been re-accepted as safe by the FDA and are a popular choice for creating a natural-looking breast augmentation. Saline implants are an equally safe option chosen by many patients. Dr. Ben will help you choose a size that is appropriate for your goals. Choosing an implant size is a made based on the number of cc’s of liquid held in the implant. It is not a matter of choosing a bra-size. This is why it is important to make this decision with Dr. Ben) using proper sizing techniques and actual implants. Implants may also be round or shaped like a tear-drop. This will be part of the choice you make when choosing your implants.
Breast implants may be placed on top of or below the pectoralis muscle, which is below the breast. The way Dr. Ben places your implant will be affected by your anatomy, the size and shape of the implant chosen and your goals.
There are basically four choices for incisions. Again, the factors affecting this choice will be your anatomy, your goals and the size and type of implant chosen. Dr. Ben can place the implant with an incision under the breast, with an incision around the bottom of the aereola, through the bellybutton or through the armpit. Each type of incision has its advantages and disadvantages and it is best to discuss the types of incision during your consultation with Dr. Ben.
Patients can usually return to light activity within two to three days after surgery. Full activity can be resumed within two to three weeks, but activities that entail vigorous bouncing should be avoided for six weeks.
