Labiaplasty (also labioplasty, labia minor reduction, and labial reduction) is a plastic surgery procedure for reducing the labia minora and the labia majora, which are the external folds of skin surrounding the structures of the vulva. Labial hypertrophy describes the conditions wherein a woman presents labia minora that are disproportionately large in relation to the size of the labia majora. Labiaplasty corrects such disproportions by aesthetically refining the appearance of the vulva with symmetrical labia minora, without noticeable scars. The indications for the surgical correction of over-sized labia include the tearing and stretching caused by childbirth; the correction of congenital defects (e.g. vaginal atresia, Müllerian agenesis); and cosmetic refinement of the woman’s exterior genitalia. In other surgical practice, such as sexual reassignment, a labiaplasty procedure that creates labia where none were present, is a sub-ordinate surgery within a vaginoplasty procedure.
